Filmmaker Joshua Conn has tapped into his inner Stephen King in a new horror filmed on the Surf Coast.
Josh Conn was always destined for the big screen. Crow Valley continues Josh’s love affair with film, one he traces back to watching Raiders of the Lost Ark in primary school as a 10-year-old “and being blown away by it”.
Crow Valley is very much a labour of love for Josh, who wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film.
Crow Valley Cast
The film features Geelong-based actress and producer Nicole Freeman who appeared in Aussie hit Mental with Toni Collete and Anthony LaPaglia. Nicole has also worked in television.
The cast also includes Peter Murrihy, perhaps better known as Mayor of Geelong, who plays a significant role as a kindly cabin owner who meets a rather nasty end.
“Our new mayor was such a great bloke to work with. He had to lie down in a pool of fake blood for a very long time in the middle of winter. Didn’t complain once. He was a lovely bloke and a total pro,” says Josh.

Location Surf Coast.
Filming took place along the Surf Coast in 2019, including locations in Aireys Inlet, Anglesea, the Otway Ranges and Torquay.
“It was shot on weekends with the help of friends and family in a real guerrilla filmmaking effort,” laughs Josh.

Crow Valley was released in the US, UK and Canada through 4-digital media after securing the distribution deal in 2021.
“Crow Valley was made with virtually no money, so to secure the US and UK release was absolutely massive. We’ve been amazed at how our tiny movie keeps punching above its weight,” says Josh.
The film made its big screen debut to a packed house at Lido Cinemas in Carlton as part of Monster Fest, Australia’s biggest horror film festival in December last year.
Crow Valley is now available in Australia on GooglePlay and YouTube movies.
