Geelong Waterfront Meet Up with special guest, Producer Stephen Luby

An evening with one of Australia’s most prolific producers, Stephen Luby.

Friends of Geelong Waterfront Film walked the Red Carpet in our November 2023 Meet Up with one Australia’s most prolific producers, Stephen Luby.

Stephen’s credits include high profile sketch comedy series Full Frontal and the original series of Kath and Kim. Feature films include box office hit, Crackerjack. The Secret River earned him the Screen Producers’ Association of Australia’s ‘Producer of the Year’ award and a Logie Award for ‘Most Outstanding Mini-Series or Telemovie.’

The Q&A with Stephen and Geelong Writer & Filmmaker, Ryan Chamley, gave guests an insight into making an impact in the industry and how to get your project out there. 

Connections were built with others in the industry over drinks at Beav’s Bar.

A bit more about Stephen Luby 

Stephen’s producing career began in prime time television with renowned sketch comedy series like Full Frontal, Jimeoin, and Big Girl’s Blouse. 

He ventured into feature films, including hits like Bad Eggs and the #1 Box Office sensation Crackerjack.

Alongside colleagues Mark Ruse, Gina Riley, and Jane Turner, Stephen co-developed the beloved series Kath and Kim.

 

Ruby Entertainment, the production company he co-founded, continued to flourish, producing telemovies like the Murray Whelan series and the enduring comedy/drama Bed of Roses, featuring Kerry Armstrong. Notably, Stephen’s work on The Secret River earned him the Screen Producers’ Association of Australia’s ‘Producer of the Year’ award and a Logie Award for ‘Most Outstanding Mini-Series or Telemovie.’

Beyond producing, he shares his expertise as an instructor in the Master of Producing program at the Victorian College of the Arts.

About Ryan Chamley

Ryan Chamley is an award-winning writer/director and co-owner of Robot Army Productions, Geelong. 

In 2016, his debut project ‘Rostered On’ made Australian television history as the first independent comedy acquired by Netflix, with the second season commissioned by 7mate.

He also wrote and directed ‘My Friend Anxiety’ in 2021, which won “Best Screenplay” at The Hollywood Short Film Festival. Following the success of “Rostered On”, Ryan went on to develop ‘Counter Girls’.
